Beyond Comfort: Embracing Risk and the Cannon Event in Design

Beyond Comfort: Embracing Risk and the Cannon Event in Design

Is design becoming too complacent, or are we as designers stuck in our comfortable bubble, hesitant to take risks and bring about the transformative change that not only fosters innovation but also expands the branches of our design perception?

Is design becoming too complacent, or are we as designers stuck in our comfortable bubble, hesitant to take risks and bring about the transformative change that not only fosters innovation but also expands the branches of our design perception?

What I sense is that design has gradually become stagnant over time, and we have simply grown accustomed to it. Examples like "Nothing's Phone" demonstrates this, as no one had previously considered making the back of a device transparent and aesthetically pleasing with such attention to detail. On the other hand, Apple, known for taking risks, launched the iPhone 14 Pro in September 2022 with the dynamic island, creating a groundbreaking event that transformed how designers perceive the notification panel. It's not solely about designing something eye-catching, but rather creating a design that challenges and reshapes our perspective on design itself.

Design Is a Process of Risk and Resilience

Creating a design is similar to learning to walk.
You get up, you stumble, you take risks, and you strive to walk steadily.

You repeat this process numerous times until you attain mastery.

I believe that Apple didn't simply create something extraordinary out of thin air; they invested substantial resources and might have encountered failures along the way. However, the outcome they presented to the world is undeniably remarkable and makes it all worthwhile.

Pushing Beyond the Comfort Zone

As designers, we can unanimously acknowledge that we always strive to unleash the full potential of our capabilities within the boundaries of our limitations.

But pause and ask:

  • What could happen if we dared to push ourselves beyond the boundaries of design comfort?

  • What if we actively sought failure within our vision of success?

It is conceivable that by doing so, we might uncover unexplored possibilities that could revolutionize our perception of design, even beyond our wildest imagination.

Fueling Innovation Through Passion

What continually fuels my motivation is the desire to introduce fresh ideas and innovations.
It is the very reason I pursued a career in design and why I am enthusiastic about giving my utmost effort, even in tasks that may not necessarily demand it.

Yes, it can be tiring, but the feeling of satisfaction I experience whenever someone praises my design makes it all worthwhile.

Whatever inspires and drives you during the creative process, harness that passion and demonstrate the full extent of your capabilities to make a meaningful contribution to the industry.

Be the Next Cannon Event

We have the potential to create the next groundbreaking event in the design field.
All we need to do is break free from the confines of comfortable design and make a resounding impact in the field.

After all, design is not solely about the act of designing itself; it is about:

  • Crafting designs of significant value

  • Becoming the next Cannon event

  • Serving as an inspiration for everyone
